The drug Rezulin (Troglitazone) was introduced in 1997, and hailed as a breakthrough in the treatment of diabetes
If left untreated, diabetes can cause heart and kidney failure and blindness among other serious effects.
Rezulin was approved on the FDA’s “fast track” approval process, despite the objections of several FDA scientists. Three years after its introduction onto the US market, the FDA announced a total recall of Rezulin. This was in response to more than 50 deaths due to liver failure that were attributed to the drug.
Eventually, at least 61 patients died while taking Rezulin, and another seven required liver transplants. There is strong reason to believe that hundreds, possibly thousands more patients have been afflicted with similar complications.
