In 2001, the Ortho Evra birth control patch FDA approved the Ortho Evra patch to be used by women as an effective form of birth control. Since that time, more than five million women have used the product.
Ortho McNeil, the manufacturer, used an aggressive marketing campaign to promote their product, including television commercials, celebrity endorsements, radio ads and advertisements in magazines. Although the patch has not been recalled, there have been warnings released regarding major health concerns for women who use the medication.

Other reports have shown that women who use the patch as compared to an oral birth control pill are three times more likely to die or to suffer from blood clots.
