The manufacturer of the heartburn drug, Propulsid (cisapride) was forced to take the drug off the market in July of 2000 due to significant health risks associated with the drug. Propulsid has been linked to hundreds of heart-rhythm disorders, including 80 deaths.
Although the drug had only been approved for nighttime use, many doctors had been prescribing it off-label, according to the manufacturer. In addition, Propulsid was given to thousands of premature babies and children, even though it was only approved by the FDA for use in adults. The FDA knows of at least 11 deaths and 20 nonfatal heart problems involving children who were taking Propulsid.
