The side effects associated with this medication are still being discovered, so it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible, and to explore your legal rights in this matter.
A January 26, 2006 article in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that the medication Trasylol (the trade name for the generic aprotinin) may double the risk of kidney failure and increase the change of heart attack and failure by 55 percent. The new study is especially troubling since many patients who have undergone heart surgery received Trasylol to prevent blood loss during the procedure. (Trasylol is made by Bayer.)
Trasylol has been in wide use in as many as 60 countries since being approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1993. The most recent study was done independently, and was conducted by Dr. Dennis T. Mangano. During the study some patients were given Trasylol, others were given generic alternatives, and a control group received no medication at all.
The group that was took Trasylol had an increased risk, from 1.3 percent to 2.8 percent, for heart attacks, kidney (renal) failure, strokes, and death. The study concluded that Trasylol should not be used at all since the generic alternatives posed no such risk.
The study, involving more than 4,300 heart surgery patients, showed data that was grossly inconsistent with previous studies conducted by Bayer Healthcare. Company research, conducted over a period of more than 15 years, indicated no serious side effects associated with the medication.
Sales of Trasylol increases over the past two years as the company began to market the drug for additional uses
Trasylol costs are high, running as much as $1,000 per dose, versus $10-15 for the generic alternatives.
